as a cyclist, I...(insert entitled bullshit)

Find this video really bad. But also really good. You see, when you ride a bicycle as a method to commute  you get injured if you’re an idiot in 9/10 cases, and if we can make idiots get off Specialized bikes and into those monstrosities, maybe less idiots get injured, which is better for businesses like soul cycles and the hipster açaí bowl stands of the city.

Kinja'd!!!

But only cyclists with Specialized bikes, Specialized bikes are the bike equivalent of Mustangs at C&C. Change my mind.

I know nothing about cycling except that it involves a lot of wealthy 225-lb men obsessing over grams. And I don’t mean cocaine.

I really want to like it (I was a pretty avid MTBer in my teens, and I live near a world-class 25-mile single track loop/course)  but the bike prices and the obsessiveness are just too much.

I guess people say that about cars. But with bikes, it’s like everyone’s an enthusiast.

The obnoxious cyclists are the worst. I remember seeing this asshole on a Specialized and a lycra suit doing 45km/h or so on the bike line, and he’d punch anyone who got in his way.

Thing is, here most bike lanes also serve as public transport stops, where normal humans would let the people that take the bus get into the bus, but this asshole ran right past them and slapped people’s heads.

Yeah, the wannabes really cause trouble for the rest of us - if you let them. The problem is that it’s hard to distinguish between wannabes and “regular” cyclists. You see, the gear really does make a big difference in the experience. There’s a lot to be said for a set of cycling shorts with a proper chamois and a well-fitted jersey. They really do make the experience a lot more comfortable. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find good jerseys that aren’t splashed with logos or graphics.

So, when I’m out and about, I grab a wicking Tee to go with my cycling shorts. It’s flapping in the wind and causing a bunch of drag, but at least the wannabes can tell I’m not one of them. They knew that when they saw t he rest of my gear anyway. No self-respecting wannabe would ride with fenders! What really gets them is the moustache bars. Holy crap! What are those?!?

T hey scoff at me as they blow past. I’m ok with that. But I do like to surprise them by c ranking it up a few notches and hanging with them for a while. I really like doing it over the rough sections so I can watch them wince in pain while I cruise in comfort with my “fat” tires. But I really prefer to cruise along and enjoy the ride. After all, I’m not racing.

Truth be told, neither are they. It’s really no different than going to a car meet . Everyone stands around being an ass about why their car is better than t he others. I like to see the cars, but I’d rather not talk to the most of the owners. Cyclists and car guys have more in common than they realize.

Hey I resemble that remark. But I have never had a specialized road bike only their mountain bikes. I’m currently ridding a BMC road bike that may be more pretentious than a specialized.

Considering my own riding habits, the information presented in that video seems to make sense.

When I am cycling with my family, we travel at much slower speeds and I am hyper aware of our surroundings with a focus on safety.

When I am cycling for recreation or fitness, speeds are higher. The focus shifts to fun.

When Strava is turned on, all hell breaks loose. Gotta get those PR’s and KOM’s. FUCK EVERYONE ELSE!!! ME ME ME!!!

Ahem. So, yeah.

My only real beefs with Specialized are that they seem to be LBS bullies. If you want to stock them, they supposedly have a habit of pushing shops around to get their way.

Also, when I start doing cost: benefit analysis whilst looking at their offerings, I realize you’re paying for the name on the frame more than anything. Oh, you want better than mediocre running gear? Hope you’ve been working overtime.

Then I go buy something used, with better components, for 1/4 the cost. That might just be me though.

That said, my Hard Rock frame lasted just fine, until it was jacked... Though the crank, rings, and everything else were on their last legs. Jokes on you, thief.

Talk about a cross-population of natty hipster with no real message and bullshit number wankery. Yes, I did turn this off after :16 when it became clear how misinformed the intent was.

Here is the deal. Whatever you want to call these rental bikes they are cantankerous ill handling and too slow to get into anything but stupid collisions while riding. They are incredibly stable to allow the amount of rubbernecking touron activities and uncoordinated people you expect to find astride them semi-safe passage. Basically they paint em garish colors and everyone knows to be wary when encountering them.

Second part of this, I didn’t watch so ???, is big S. Which is to bikes what BMW, Audi, and Chrysler 300 owners combined are to asshole drivers with a heavy dose of Mustang thrown in. They are frames with low life expectancy and pig metal parts prone to the most dangerous of failures. Have no concern whether they will be associated with Orbea in the 80's and every other inherently dangerous manufacturer that capitalism allowed to prosper undeservingly. Little doubt they appeal to the low of esteem and high of felt need to display overpriced possessions.

Tl;dr This video is all you need on your fine Sunday morning.

Its not about the price, its about the brand. Here in Mexico real pros use Santa Cruzes and Treks, true posers use Specialized

Specialized bikes are accessible for the entry level enthusiast because they’re affordable but really good bikes for the money. I got my daughter one.   Unfortnately, they’re also in the perfect slot for the posers, or the people who think they want to become enthusiasts but find out after purchase that they don’t want to put in the real effort.

Jamis is kind of in the same market position, but they’re not ubiquitous like Specialized.

Well, the good thing about not being so serious is that I would sprint past him and he got angry, but also more tired so he slowed down and I over took again

Two things about this video. First, none of this is an excuse to not wear a helmet. Second, Dallas is finding a dark side to sharing services. People are dropping them wherever they are when done with them, and the companies don’t rush to collect them. Cities like ours are considering ordinances to do things like impound loose bikes left out after a certain hour to encourage the owners to pick them up.

Also, I see a lot of homeless people conscripting the bikes.  Since you need a phone with an app to unlock and rent one, I’m assuming they break the locks.

I think I’d sit on a path-side bench with a stick. Enjoy eating pavement and replacing those front spokes there speed rager.

I mean, being inconsiderate is one thing, but to go  around assaulting people for no reason is another entirely.

If that happened to me there’d be one or two things that would happen. I’d wait at that bus stop regularly until I saw him again and then he’d find out what life was like with shattered knee caps and broken ribs. More likely, I’d sit back recording with my phone and then call the police. Let them charge him with simple battery/assault for each person he hit.

A Slow ass comfort bike rolling along at 10mph is safer  zooming through the city at 20-30 mph on a road bike?

The statistics he cites in the beginning are driving me up a fucking wall. 21 in 100 million? A 35% decrease puts that at a whole 14 in 100 million. .000 021% to .000 014%

An d that’s also comparing a nationwide stat to a city stat. What’s the overall rate in DC compared the bike share stats? That’s the number you want.

That is just Mexico then because lots of non posers ride specialized here. Santa Cruz is cool but I like the shop that sells specialized, Yeti, and Devinci more.

In my experience posers ride the latest bling bike by some upstart brand but never get more than a few miles into any trail.

I’d guess that deaths fall as density increases, since cars get to go slower, and trips are shorter.

Well, less speed is safer, but ride share bikes are less maneuverable, have worn out, high use components, and since a helmet isn’t provided, it’s less likely for the rider to use a helmet at all.

Trek is the real LBS mob operation. A local shop closed, another shop opened and trek really wanted him to carry their stuff but the terms were alarently horrendus. Guy sells Bianchi, great group to sell he says. Shops real busy too.

Its funny to see and hear that here in Colorado bike eliteism really isnt a thing but farther away one gets the more pretentious things become. Bike meccha is cool with whatever you got but elsewhere Its nothing if not campy or pinarello kind of BS. What i AM seeing however is the s erious trainers are rarely letting a rider know theyre passing on the left. Local pros DO say something. So the wannabes still kinda suck even in mecca.

I tried aluminum (caad rocks but buzzy after 60mi) , magneesium alloy (smooth like steel stiffer than alu but any jolts just kill you) , im happy with a racy steel now on 28c. Built it as a century bike. 21 pounds. Does gravel well. Could be why the wannabes say nothing when passing. Steel? Jeez....

I used the DC bikeshare one day. Liked it a lot. You can rest your forearms on the bars and TT yourself at decent speed too. The weight and draggy wheels/drivetrain kind of pissed me off but i was so used to a road rocket. Its exactly right for that environment.

Yeah, I’m of the F- Trek mindest. I’m not one to get caught up in cycling drama, but after the Lemond fiasco it’s a matter of principal to avoid them and their subsidiaries. I even get a little annoyed at my Bontrager crank arms, as they’re attached to a Lemond Poprad.

...and I’m firmly in the Steel is R eal camp. Not everyone agrees, but I know it’s comfier to me than anything short of titanium or carbon, and I’m probably not splurging on either of those. (Ok, maybe Ti. If it’s a bargain.)

I'm no weight weenie though, so different strokes and all that.

Yup, it’s a Reynolds frame and I adore it. Soma makes great frames as well imho. Got my wife a double cross, in fact! Also steel. :)
